Stax Records

I got this double CD for my birthday a few months ago. It's deadly. Literally (not literally). But it is really good, Stax had this amazing converted studio with a slanty floor and all sorts, and was home to Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. It's proper soul and sounds amazing.

Anywho on the course of cruising around the interweb found this cool site about the Stax Museum. I wanna go!

I had a dream

Well actually it was before i went to sleep so it wasn't in fact a dream. I hopped off to the my leaba last night, the heating was on, and this may explain what i am about to type here.

I wrote an amazing song last night.

It was amazing, literally it would have been a fantastic one hit wonder and i would inspire people.

I have never written a song in life before, and that's ok. I'm not that way inclined. I don't have that gift for it like him, and her and them.

But last night that changed. I was just nodding off, when a tune came into my head. And the lyrics were there too, it just sort of travelled into my head, and it was kind of fully formed. Not unlike Harry Potter i suppose.

I was lying there thinkin i should write this down, but i thought, i'm already going to sleep much past my bed time i think i'll do it in the morning. And in the morning it was gone.

Stupid Drinking

Shane Hegarty mentioned some girls who were talking about mixing Calpol with Jack Daniels at Arcade Fire.

I don't think this would be for me. But it got me thinking of stupid drinking habits/experiments/pain wishes.

A particular genius idea, was Mojitos, made with lemsip powder because we couldn't find any lime. This was not a good idea. It was New Years last year, and literally the only thing i can remember is hearing the Bells on my friends balcony, and telling a Frenchman my life story in Temple Bar. Yock, i still cringe at this thought.

There was another experience, but i'm still too fragile to discuss it.

This is so cool!

The Automated Beacon. I found it on the Tate site. They were doing some Olympic 40 days thing. there's actually some cool stuff on it, I really like that Anthony Gormley chap.

But the automated beacon is best. It tracks or something (i don't know abotu these things) what people are searching for online! People search for very weird things.

Super Furry Animals

I was at the Super Furry Animals in Vicar Street the other night. I love Vicar Street. Love it. I think it's one of the best venues going, well of the ones i have visited, which i suppose is not the most wide reaching.

But anyway i was going with my cousin J who went to Australia yesterday for 8 weeks. I will miss her, i do make her go to gigs with my a lot, we saw teh flaming lips in Vicar Street a few months ago: WOW.

Anywho i saw SFA a few months ago as well at Lovebox. I thought they were deadly! maybe it was the cocktails, or the one day, with only a few droplets of the wet stuff.

Anyway, i was less impressed this time round. I've got that new album dealy and have been enjoying it, but i thought SFA were fairly below par to start off with. Maybe it was just me, but i just didn't get it. Went out to the bar at one stage and decided to just chill out there for a while. Bear (Bare?) in mind that i'd been looking forward to the gig since Lovebox.

After the little break they started to rev up a bit, and it got brilliant. It was like a poor band taking off their masks (or putting on a helmet) and playing some deadly tunes, really well.

I especially liked (is that the word..?) that song about Phil Spector's Wife, weird but very interesting!

They did the usual excellent faves like Rings around the World, and the Man Don't Give a Fuck. Juxtaposed with U, Receptacle for the Respectable If You Don’t Want Me to Destroy You and my favourite (obviously) Hello Sunshine. It got very entertaining with the guys in the balcony who were doing what can only be described as a bushwhacker dance!! All in all, without the first maybe 20 mins, i would have been a very happy bunny.

Phobias

So i was listening to the old Wireless yday, and they were talking about phobias, and i was thinking about any phobias i have. I do have one fairly substantial one, but i seem to have developed two more recently.

I was walking on a new path the other day, just a brand new path, like made with big stone blocks, and i dont know if it was my shoes, or the rain, or what but i nearly puked, it felt disgusting. It's a bloody path i say to myself, but i actually had to run off it, even now i've got a yock feeling talking about it.

The other one is people with braided hair, but the really REALLY really tightly disgusting braided hair, where you can see people's scalps. I got very freaked out and also had that horrible wretchy feeling when i saw this recently. And i didn't even realise i was.

Sutpid yockness.

So last week i met

Dan le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip. I dunno what their real names are, but i met them, and turned into a walking cabbage. I was in a certain media centre, and they were there hanging outside, and no one else seemed to have ANY idea who they were.

I was on my own, waiting for my friend, and decided sure i'll go say hello.

I was an idiot, i turned out all, oh you guys are great, raving crap, i think the poor chaps were lucky to get rid of me!

They were very nice though, and also i love them!

Rufus Wainwright

Is amazing. I've always liked Rufus (see, first name basis) so that probably helps. I saw him first at EP 05, I think it was 05 and i saw lights shining out of his head. He was amazing.

The show on tuesday, i felt like i was in a trance. i felt like i had crawled into his brain and was lying on a pillow in there just enthralled. He's very witty, and charming, even from a distance of 15 feet, and made some quality jokes throughout. In fact charming is just the word for him.

Got into Vicar Street at bout 7.45, there may or may not have been a support act, either way i wouldn't have seen it, was in work til 6 so had to kinda make a mad dash for it!

Anywho, arrived in at table number 91, me and my friend L. we've both seen rufus before, but weren't prepared for how brilliant he would be! Met our friend I as well, who bout about 50,000 euro worth of merchandise, but who was sitting in the front row, where i wish i had been!

Anyway, it all started, the band came out, basist, couple of guitaritst, drummer and brass section. But there were no ser rules, most of the band swapped around and played a bit of keyboard, some guitar, there was a banjo. it was cool.

4 costumer changes! there were 4! at one stage he wa sin lederhosen...have a look at the current album sleeve. Also his bassist is very hot.

So rufus arrived out in a fabulous (that is the only word) stripy pants, shirt and blazing combo with very sparkly jewellery and brooches, which he later joked about!


He was touring with Release the Stars, which i think is a deadly album, (yeah im absolutely biased i suppose) He opened up with the title track, and they had these two massive disco balls, which they shone the lights on at just the right moment.

He mostly covered Release the Stars, and Poses,

He also did a cover of a Count John McCormack song.
(oh yeah, one of those voices shouting Athlone is me)

He was chatting away and said , oh yeah im gonna sing it the way Count John McCormack sang it and stepped away from the Microphone. Well if there was ever someone born to sing, it was him. He really has teh most fabulous voice, and an amazing range. Ok i'm turning into a simpering supernerd geek fan!

Ok moving swiftly on before this develops into a novel, highlights for me were Machushla,apparently that's how it's spelt! weird!

so anyway other serious highlights for me were Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk, Danny Boy, Do I Disapoint You?, Sansoucci, and Beautiful Child. But the whole show was excellent. He played for almost three hours and it felt like 5 mins, i was dying to go again on the thursday, but of course that's another story.

i also can't really believe i bought a ridiculously over-priced t-shirt, ah well, i do love it!

the best bit was the encore, when everyone had said tehir goodbyes, the band had done a deadly little play off deally, and then they all trooped on after abotu 5 mins, Rufus in a fancy white dressing gown.

Now i'd heard about this bit, and youtubed it, but it's well worth seeing! He sat down in his dressing gown at teh front of the stage, took out some high heels from his bag, and a tube of red lipstick and painted his lips.

Then he went to the back of the stage and it went dark, what followed really has to be seen. All his band were dressed in tuxedos while the man himself put on a trilby, and pulled off teh dressing gown, he was wearing a tuxedo jacket and tights, along with the high heels.

He danced around the stage to Get Happy, i know i posted the youtube the other day, but here it is again:

if you get the chance please go see Rufus, he's brilliant.

it was funny...i got a taxi to the gig, and the conversation went a bit like this:
Taxi man: who you gonna see?
me: oh this guy called rufus wainwright,
taxi man: any good?
me: oh he's great, i've seen him before, he's really good.
taxi man: anything i would have heard.
me: er...no

rufus isn't very well known for hit singles, or that much of a hit album. but he def puts on a spectacular show, and has one of the best voices you can hear around and about today.

got home and watched a bit of the making of LCD Soundsystem's latest vid on the Last Broadcast. Good but not a patch on Rufus.

What does it sound like? Are you happy with it?

Well... to me it sounds like music I'd like to dance to. And not serious dancing. Just child-like, please don't catch me on camera kinda happy dancing. I wrote half of the album on drums instead of piano or guitar because I really wanted to make music that would keep me lifted through the whole proccess... The subject matter is quite sinister and at times macabre, so the music had to counter that if I was to enjoy it, and I wanted to let moments have their own full charge... Not be embarrassed by them. Big feelings in little packages.

How is the subject matter sinister?

I had a head full of skeletons and if I wrote songs for them they danced.

The Princess Bride

Well i got this weird email the other day abotu some kind of Princess Bride 20th Anniversary edition. It got me thinking about the Princess Bride, which is one of my favourite ever ever films. The book is absolutely deadly too!

The day i almost

Met Angela Lansbury, is also the day that i nearly choked laughing about Brian Kennedy, but that's an entirely different story.

So i've always been a fan of Murder, She Wrote and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. What's not like to like really. Murder, She Wrote and other programmes of that ilk are great. They are gentle, very funny and they aren't out to hurt anyone, take note: Jerry Springer and your cronies. Jerry Springer makes me think of road rage :X

Anywho, myself and a few friends had heard that Angela Lansbury was going to be visiting the Irish Film Institute. That was it, we had to go.
So Angela, we found out lives in West Cork, near Jeremy Irons pink castle apparently! And she delighted us in coming up for a special screening of the Blackwater Lightship and an interview to be aired on Rattlebag.

Anywho it was deadly, we ended up sitting in about the second row, it was very exciting! The film was pretty good, actually i saw it recently which i think is what reminded me about this.



Anyway, the film was shown, and was very enjoyable, but to be fair everyone was waiting for Angela to arrive!

She came out wearing a lovely silk blouse, beige trouser combo thing. She's very well spoken, and she came across really well. She was able to talk in a lovely charming way abotu all teh theatre and film she's done, and the amazing actors she's worked with,

and then the questions started.

So anyway the questions, there were real genuine questions, about actors she's worked with, highlights of her career, for me it's sweeney todd.

So there was a nice gentle question and answer session, did you know Angela

but what was really special was the die hard fans, read geeks in the front row. Now i know i sound like a gig for even thinking about writing about this. But they were serious SERIOUS geeks! they were like oh in minute 24 of that episode what were you thinking, and one was like, "oh we never knew each other before today, we met through Angelalansbury.net". They had come from Germany, and England. But i suppose each to their own.

So after the chat, everyone got up to do a little meet and greet, and we were three people away, i'm not messing three people away, and the pr person whisked her off! :( didn;t totally break my respect for her, but there's definately a dent there. So close and yet so far.

The there was teh group who came with Murder, She Wrote board game. One girl had saved it since she was a child, possibly in teh hope that she would one day meet Angela. She also got fobbed off, as the rush of the super breed of geeks, was too much for us lesser geeks.

Anyway, check her out. She's done a lot.
